Telent announces acquisition of Gateshead’s Integrated Design Techniques

Telent has acquired Gateshead traffic technology company IDT, bolstering its traffic management and communications solution offerings for local authorities.

Telent will build on IDT’s technology to develop traffic management solutions, including 5G-based systems. IDT (Integrated Design Techniques Ltd) designs, develops and manufactures data communications and traffic management products for use in Smart City networks.

Team Valley-based IDT will be incorporated into Telent’s Traffic division and IDT’s solutions will be integrated into Telent’s traffic technology suite.

RMT Accountants & Business Advisors, acted on behalf of IDT during the acquisition, while Ben Jackson of the Corporate Team , John Morgan (commercial property) and Sarah Hall (employment) at Hay & Kilner provided legal advice.

“We’re thinking about the future of traffic technology, its demands, and our customers’ future requirements with this acquisition” said Steve Dalton, Managing Director – Transport at Telent.

“Incorporating IDT’s expertise and technology into our own will really bolster our offering to our customers and enable us to explore new opportunities. It’s really exciting for us to be taking over such a well-established and successful company and to build on the relationships that IDT has formed with its customer base.”

As part of the acquisition, Telent will inherit IDT’s customer base of over 50 Local Authorities – and major suppliers to the traffic sector – several of which Telent already works with.

The acquisition will also allow Telent to transition into new technologies as the demands of traffic management systems change, including 5G-based networking.

A key solution offered by IDT is its iMesh wireless solutions for traffic signals. Mesh radio allows for communications cost savings because only one broadband leased line is needed to operate multiple traffic junctions, for example. On a mesh network, systems – such as Vehicle Detection, Journey Time Monitoring and CCTV – can be added to the network without the need for additional wired connectivity.

The IDT solutions also provide a platform for Local Authorities to move to 5G private networks, as part of their strategic Smart City developments.

Telent has a pre-existing working relationship with IDT, having partnered on contracts including Kent County Council, Leeds City Council and Oxfordshire County Council.

“We’re really excited for Telent to be taking the company and the technology forward to continue having a real impact on effective traffic management”, said IDT’s Managing Director, Richard Gibson.

“We’re confident that Telent’s expertise, experience, and relationships in the Transport sector will ensure that IDT’s technology is in the safe pair of hands it deserves and will guarantee its success and development”.

The existing owners of IDT will support Telent during the transition period to ensure a smooth handover and that the customer base is well looked after.
