Lauren Hall, a Partner in our Clinical Negligence Team at Hay & Kilner, recently represented the Estate of a patient who tragically passed away due to negligent post-operative treatment.
The patient had a history of complications from a childhood brain tumour, leading to frequent catheter blockages and recurring infections from an old stoma. To address these issues, surgery was planned to close the stoma and administer a Botox injection into her bladder. A urine sample taken before surgery showed an infection resistant to Ciprofloxacin.
Despite the urine sample results, the patient was discharged with Ciprofloxacin antibiotics. She vomited before discharge but was sent home without a doctor's assessment. At home, her condition worsened with vomiting, loose stools, and abdominal pain. She was taken to the Emergency Department, where she sadly went into cardiac arrest and passed away. The cause of death was multi-organ failure due to sepsis.
Lauren Hall represented the family during the Inquest. It was revealed that the surgeon had not checked the urine sample results before surgery and incorrectly prescribed Ciprofloxacin. The surgeon should also have administered additional antibiotics to prevent infection from the stoma removal. Additionally, the patient was discharged without proper assessment or information on sepsis signs. The Inquest concluded that these failings contributed to the patient's death.
The Inquest findings were reported in the local press. The Defendant did not deny liability, and a five-figure settlement was reached for the patient's Estate. The patient's family expressed their gratitude for Lauren's support throughout the process.
