Hay & Kilner advise on the sale of long-standing client Wingrove Motor Company to Arnold Clark

Hay & Kilner has advised long standing client Wingrove Motor Company on their sale to Arnold Clark, for an undisclosed sum.

Family-owned Wingrove Motor Company, based in Wallsend, North Tyneside was the largest family-owned and operated motor company in the North East. The business ran a range of motor franchises across the region for the last 99 years.

The family firm operated four centres in the region, including showrooms in Silverlink, North Tyneside, and Fenham, Newcastle, a body shop in Cramlington and a prep centre close to Shiremoor, North Tyneside.

The group was founded in 1925 by John Myers Dalkin Snr and has been run by successive generations of the family ever since.

Scottish car dealer group Arnold Clark (who reported revenues of £4.96 billion for 2023) is the UK’s largest independently owned, family-run car retailer, and has been running since 1954.

Josh Parker, Managing Director at Wingrove Motor Company said: “Wingrove and Hay & Kilner have been working in close partnership for many years. As always, Hay & Kilner provided excellent support, expertise and advice on this important transaction. Ben Jackson and team worked tirelessly to get the deal done.”

While the family have taken the decision to step away from the motor trade, we will be forever grateful for the people that have journeyed with us over the years. We wish all the staff and customers a smooth transition to Arnold Clark and we’re sure that you’ll continue to find outstanding deals and friendly customer service.

Hay & Kilner’s corporate, commercial property and employment teams provided legal advice to Wingrove on the transaction.

A team of specialists from the firm worked on the deal led by Ben Jackson, Senior Associate in the Corporate team, and supported by Lydia Sevenoaks (Corporate Solicitor), Tom Clarke (Employment Associate), Nicola Tiffen (Commercial Property Partner), John Morgan (Commercial Property Partner) and Jennifer Boynton (Commercial Property Associate).

Ben Jackson, Corporate Senior Associate at Hay & Kilner said: “We were delighted to support Wingrove Motor Company on the sale of their business and wish Arnold Clark every success with the business going forward.

“This transaction marks more than two decades working with Wingrove and demonstrates our approach to building long standing client relationships and the variety of services Hay & Kilner offers. As well as providing holistic commercial advice to Wingrove across a range of matters, Hay & Kilner’s Private Client team, led by Partner Alice Clewes, have provided advice and support to the individual shareholders over the years.”

“We were active across numerous sectors during 2024 and this transaction capped off an incredibly successful year for the team and the firm as a whole.”
